Chapter 14

“Alright, so here’s what we have so far,” Rabbit started, pulling files up on his screen. He opened the first one, showing Alexi the documents within. He’d been so pleased that Alexi had been ordered to stay home for the weekend, he’d kept Lacy until lunch time and brought everyone Chipotle. After they ate, Hector took Lacy and Meela to the park to give the hackers time to get started.

“Judge Bolton Forge received a sizable campaign donation from the Kane family during his run for re-election two years ago, to the tune of twenty-thousand-dollars. It seems Forge and Tommy’s father went to law school together, so they’re in long standing with the good ol’ boys club.” Rabbit scrolled down.

“While this isn’t enough evidence to say that’s why he ruled the way he did, it’s only the beginning of a pattern. We looked through his records of conviction, and in every case he refused to allow evidence, we found a connection. Not all were campaign donations. In one case, the defendant was the son of a fellow member of his Country Club, another has made donations to Forge’s foundation for pre-law student aid.”

“In short, the judge is dirty,” Alexi summed up.

“And now we have proof. He is in family law, so a majority of his cases are divorce issues, custody hearing etc. However, over ninety percent of those he refused to see evidence in all involved physical or sexual abuse.” Rabbit tapped his fingers on the table. “He’s on the board.”

“We have access to everything on both the judge and his wife, their accounts, security access, and even their home and work computers. We know exactly where they’re planning to be every evening for the next two weeks,” Rabbit gave her a smug grin. He closed the file and opened the next one.

“Up next are Rita Habard and Owen Shoemaker. These two were ferreted out by an Unknown with the tag Macon, whom I think we’re going to get along with just fine. They were the social workers in this case. It was their job to pursue charges and make sure Joshua and Harper Kane were kept safe from their father. They did not advocate for these children in the manner expected of those in their office.” Rabbit took a sip of his water.

“Since we’re going in, we need to abolish the entire circle to end the cycle. Are their transgressions enough to put them on the board?” Alexi asked, fidgeting with a clicky pen.

“I am going to send you everything we found on them so you can make that decision. We’ll move forward with whatever you decide. There is not enough evidence to convict them of a crime in a legitimate court of law, as our means of obtaining it were not legal. However, I believe they are guilty of some pretty heinous crimes outside of just the Kane case.” Rabbit made a copy of the folder and sent it to Alexi.

“We cleared hospital staff of any blame. They made the appropriate calls and filed the required reports.
